Commute Cost Calculator – Compare Car, Bike & Transport Costs

Calculate your monthly commute cost and compare your car, bike, cab, auto, bus, metro or train expenses based on your actual travel and costs.

Travel Cost Calculator

Compare the estimated cost of owning and using your personal vehicle with your regular public or hired transport spending.

1. Your Travel

Used for personal-vehicle running cost and per-km transport cost.

The period used for the year-by-year comparison.

2. Your Personal Vehicle

For fuel vehicles, enter real-world mileage.

Use the fuel price you normally pay.

Fuel is selected by default. Switch to Electric to use km/kWh and electricity cost instead. Fully owned means no EMI or loan interest is included.

This is an estimate. Energy prices, maintenance, insurance, resale values and transport fares vary by vehicle, city, route, provider, usage and time.

Buying a vehicle is not just about the EMI or fuel cost. Once you add maintenance, insurance, parking, loan interest and depreciation, the actual cost of using a car, bike or scooty can be quite different.

This Commute Cost Calculator helps you estimate that cost and compare it with your regular cab, auto, bus, metro or train expenses. Enter your monthly travel distance and the costs that apply to you, and the calculator shows the estimated monthly, yearly and per-kilometre cost.

What Does the Calculator Include?

The calculator can include the main costs associated with owning and using a vehicle:

  • Fuel or electricity
  • Loan interest
  • Vehicle depreciation
  • Maintenance and servicing
  • Insurance
  • Parking and other monthly costs

You can also compare the result with another transport option using either a per-km fare, daily cost or fixed monthly spending.

How Is Commute Cost Calculated?

The calculator uses the figures you enter rather than assuming a standard cost for every vehicle.

For a petrol or diesel vehicle:

Monthly Fuel Cost = Monthly Distance ÷ Mileage × Fuel Price

For example, if you travel 1,000 km a month, get 15 km/l and pay ₹100 per litre:

1,000 ÷ 15 × ₹100 = about ₹6,667 per month

For an EV, the same idea is used with efficiency in km/kWh:

Monthly Electricity Cost = Monthly Distance ÷ Efficiency × Electricity Price

If you enter the vehicle price and expected resale value, the calculator also estimates depreciation over your selected comparison period.

For a financed vehicle, the calculator calculates the loan interest using the entered loan amount, interest rate and tenure. If you select Fully owned, no loan interest is included.

Vehicle Cost vs Cab, Auto or Public Transport

The alternative transport cost can be entered in three ways:

MethodCalculation
Per kmMonthly distance × cost per km
DailyDaily cost × days used per month
Fixed monthlyMonthly transport spending

This is useful if you are trying to answer a simple question: Does owning my vehicle make financial sense for the amount I actually travel?

For example, someone travelling only a few hundred kilometres a month may have a very different result from someone travelling 2,000 km every month. The same applies to parking, maintenance and financing costs.

Example

Suppose you travel 1,000 km every month in a car costing ₹10 lakh. If the car gives 15 km/l and petrol costs ₹100/litre, your fuel expense alone is around ₹6,667 per month.

But that is not the complete cost of the car. If you also pay for insurance, servicing, parking and loan interest, and the car loses value over time, the actual economic cost is higher.

That is why this calculator looks at more than just fuel or EMI.

Important Things to Keep in Mind

The result is only as good as the numbers you enter. Use your real-world mileage, actual fuel or electricity price, realistic maintenance cost and a reasonable resale estimate.

If you leave a cost blank, the calculator does not invent an average value for it. For example, if you do not enter a resale percentage, depreciation is excluded from the calculation.

Similarly, if you select a loan but do not provide the required loan rate and tenure, loan interest cannot be calculated.

Important Note

This calculator gives an estimate, not an exact future cost. Actual expenses can change because of fuel and electricity prices, mileage, maintenance, insurance, parking, loan terms, transport fares and the eventual resale price of the vehicle.

The depreciation calculation is also a simplified estimate based on the vehicle price, expected resale percentage and comparison period. It is not a professional vehicle valuation.
